Pastor Umar Mulinde: A Man with The Heart of a Lion

When members of the world's Christian community gathered in Jerusalem for the 4th Jerusalem Assembly, Jay, Meridel and David arranged to bring Pastor Mulinde to Jerusalem to meet with some of the leaders.

The story of Pastor Umar Mulinde and his journey from preaching Islam to Christianity is one that everyone must pay attention to. As a former Muslim he speaks honestly about Islam and the danger that it represents. Pastor Mulinde emphasizes that he does not hate Muslims. He tells us "we don't fight Muslims", rather, the fight is with the "Spirit of Islam".

We had posted some excerpts from this meeting (See Links at End of Post), but to our dismay the main portion of the films were lost. With prayer and perseverance, David was able to recover the lost footage. We are pleased to be able to post the two missing segments (Below) where Pastor Mulinde speaks honestly, from his heart, about his struggle against continuous attacks and persecution. His complete faith in the Lord has sustained him, and each time we speak with him this faith seems to have grown stronger. This soft-spoken young man remains determined to speak out and will never allow the spirit of evil to silence him.
1st Meeting~Evelyn, David, Jay, Meridel & Umar

In Part 2 (below) Pastor Mulinde reaffirms his faith and the fact that persecution will never silence him. His simply spoken words are an uplifting example for us all:

"One thing I know is that this attack cannot reduce my self-esteem, because I was attacked physically, but spiritually I am alive. The Umar Mulinde in me is alive and cannot be burned with acid. That's why I have some pain and wounds, but I can talk boldly because the real person inside me is healthy and I thank God for that!"

All of us who have had the privilege of meeting Pastor Umar and Evelyn Mulinde have been deeply touched. They have no hate, no wish for revenge~just a steadfast belief and acceptance that the Lord is in control. Many people speak from podiums and pulpits, but this young pastor speaks from his heart with a message that cannot be denied or passed over. Words cannot portray the spirit that surrounds this young family, but all who encounter this man will come away deeply affected by the fire in his heart that burns for the Lord. We look forward to the day when he will return in joy and triumph to his church in Uganda and the thousands who are waiting to great him and we pray that his message will be heard around the world.

Please continue to pray for Pastor Umar Mulinde, his wife Evelyn and their children. Pray that as he undergoes his final treatments, the Lord will ease the pain and bring comfort to this gentle man with the Heart of a Lion...

Pastor Umar Mulinde Meets Friends & Bishops in Jerusalem

Evelyn & Pastor Umar Mulinde
In January 2012 we met an amazing couple~Pastor Umar and Evelyn Mulinde. The circumstances were grave~Pastor Umar was in Israel for medical treatment after being doused in acid by Muslim fundamentalists. At the bottom of this post you can follow the links to articles and videos on Pastor Mulinde.

Over time, the story of this amazing man has been revealed. Born a Muslim and trained to preach Islam, Umar Mulinde had an "curious mind" and this led him to question much of what he had been taught. As a result, he found the Love of the Lord. While studying the scriptures he was constantly reading about "The God of Israel", and as he learned more, he developed a Love for Israel.

After he completed his degree, Umar was ordained as a pastor and began his outreach to other Muslims. These actions were like a "death warrant", but he was not deterred. Rejected and considered "dead" by his family, persecuted by the Muslim community, this young man built a church in Uganda with thousands of followers. Each Monday, his congregation spends the day studying and praying for Israel. Below he tells Bishop Daniel Williams of Christian Communion International, that he believes his faith and this devotion to "bless" Israel may be one reason that his life was saved in this latest, vicious attack, referring to the scripture:

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curse thee...Genesis 12:3
Bishop Quintin Moore

In April 2012 during the 4th Jerusalem Assembly. David, Jay and Meridel brought Pastor Mulinde from the Tel HaShomer hospital in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem to meet with Christian leaders attending the assembly.

The clip below is of an encounter that took place in the lobby as they arrived. Bishop Quintin Moore of The Christian Communion International, and lead pastor of The Father's House speaks with Pastor Mulinde and they discover a common friend, "John", who was the pastor that led Umar to the Lord!

In the next days we will post the round table meeting between Pastor Mulinde and some of the key speakers at the 4th Jerusalem Assembly. You will hear Pastor Mulinde tell his riveting story of the persecutions he endured on his journey of faith...from Islam to Jerusalem...Do Stay Tuned!

A Meeting with Pastor Umar Mulinde in Jerusalem

Pastor Umar Mulinde~Jerusalem
On Thursday (31 May 2011), we posted Parts 1 and 2 of a moving, private meeting with Pastor Umar Mulinde and a some of the people who attended the 4th Jerusalem Assembly, including Jay and Meridel Rawlings, and Dr. Charlotte Phillips. Today we have Parts 3 and 4 for your viewing.

On Christmas Eve 2011, the young Pastor of a Church in Uganda, (Pastor Umar Mulinde) was the victim of a cowardly terror attack~because he chose to leave Islam for Christianity. More than that, he openly shared his love of God and Israel with his fellow citizens! Following the attack, and fearing for his life, he contacted Jerusalem OnlineU (where he had learned about Israel) and requested to be brought to Israel for his treatment. Very quickly, calls were made, and the wheels were set in motion. Travel Visas were arranged, the wonderful doctors at Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, offered to care for him without charge and within days he was in Tel Aviv.

Evelyn & Umar Mulinde
When we first met Pastor Umar and his lovely wife Evelyn their quiet strength touched us all very deeply and they quickly became "part of the family".  This young man has suffered (and still suffers) unspeakable pain.

Pastor Umar has not had his wife by his side for the majority of this time as she had to return to Uganda where their six young children are. Rather than complain of his own situation, both Pastor Umar and his wife were concerned with how the children would react to these events. He was determined that his wife be with their children to help them deal with what had happened and not turn away from their faith in the Lord.

David said that Pastor Umar has the Heart of a Lion and we have seen this demonstrated over and over again.

In the first video clip below, Pastor Mulinde speaks to those present and in the second clip he asks for prayer and receives a blessing, then he delivers an Important Message for all in the West.

Pastor Umar Mulinde in Jerusalem~Parts 1 and 2

Pastor Umar Mulinde and Dr. Charlotte Phillips
Many activities and gatherings took place outside the venue of the 4th Jerusalem Assembly (02 April 2012), one being a very exclusive prayer meeting. Jay, Meridel and David were able to bring a very special pastor (from Tel Aviv) to Jerusalem to be lifted up in prayer.

After being viciously attacked with acid in Uganda, Pastor Umar Mulinde, was brought to Israel for treatment. Since his arrival in Israel, he has deeply touched the hearts of many people, be they Christian, Jewish or secular. We were privileged to be able to meet with Pastor Mulinde and his lovely wife Evelyn at the Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, and they are now a part of our family. This humble, soft spoken young man truly has the Heart of a Lion beating in his chest, and his love of God has no limit. Even though he has suffered greatly, his message remains clear and his faith is stronger than ever.

The 4th Jerusalem Assembly was held during the week of 02 April 2012. One of the many prestigious speakers was Dr. Charlotte Phillips, the founder and overseer of Glory Center Ministries, Baltimore, USA.

During the first part of this spirit filled meeting, Dr. Charlotte Phillips had special words for Pastor Umar and spoke of her calling to "build a bridge between Africa and Israel". Here, for your viewing are portions from her message.

I Will Give Your Rains in Their Time...

We have been struggling with a very heavy load for the past few months and as a result posting has been slow.

This has been a very busy and trying time for us all. Sometimes it seems as if anything that can go wrong~does! When there is a deadline the power goes out, and when there are two deadlines the equipment fails.

After Pesach we hope to be back to normal~or as normal as we can manage!

Meanwhile, here is a brief update...

When we first met Pastor Umar Mulinde in January, David titled the interview, Heart of a Lion. Indeed, this is a man with such a great spirit, and fortitude, it is difficult to describe. Both he and his wife, Evelyn touched our hearts and we have enjoyed a growing friendship with them.

Sadly, the good doctors were not able to save Umars right eye. The doctors were forced to remove it and he is now recovering.

We have been blessed to be able to remain in touch, with Pastor Umar and when he is able, we will ask him to say a few words for all of his friends who have been praying for him and following his recovery. Please, do keep this precious couple, and their six small children in your prayers. They still have a very long, difficult road to walk.

Jay, Meridel and David have been at a conference at the Knesset these past two day and in Meridel's words, wonderful things are happening~she says there is a spirit she has never experienced in all her years in Israel. Of course, David has been filming the event to produce a DVD, and we will be posting clips here very soon. Be sure to check back!

Israel suffers from a lack of rain and water is always scarce. As a result, much of the country looks brown and dusty most of the time.

For the past several years, the water level has been consistently "below the red line", a constant source of worry for all.

This year, as the title of this post indicates, the rains have indeed come in their time and the land has a fresh, lush appearance.

In this picture~looking from the hills of Kisalon towards Tel Aviv you can see the the beautiful "green" carpeting the hills and valleys.

Israel often brings to mind the Bible, conflict and Tel Aviv (the city that never sleeps). It is so much more! There are beautiful hills to hike and bike, amazing plant life and a climate range from snow on the Hermon to the desert of Eilat--as well as the lowest place on earth--The Dead Sea. It is a wonderland with something for everyone.

Kisalon is a moshav in central Israel, located near Beit Shemesh and is part of the Jerusalem corridor.

Like all of Israel, there is a bit of history wherever you look.

For instance, part of the Burma Road runs through these hills.

The road was built during the 1948 siege of Jerusalem to bring relief to the residents. Some of you may remember the movie with Yul Brenner and Kirk Douglas.

You can still see sections of the road today.

Yesterday, however, it was the beautiful greenery and flowers that have sprung up as a result of the rain that drew attention. Here are a few pictures of the area for you to enjoy! By the way, I do not now the names of the flowers, so if anyone has any information to offer....

These red "tulip-like" flowers do not grow in many places. In fact, on the other side of the hill they are nowhere to be seen.  What makes them so beautiful is the shape of the petals which curve to a very fine point. So beautiful up close!

Mini blue flowers surround the base of this bush with its red berries beginning to peek through. They are beautiful, but not edible...

The plant below is called Blood of the Maccabees. You can just see the beginning of the blood red bloom...

Someone told me these were a type of orchid~whatever they are they are delicate and gorgeous!

These flowers manage to grow everywhere~even in the center of a rock...

Pastor Umar Mulinde Tells of His Progress and More...

Over the past weeks we have posted stories and two touching interviews with our friend, Pastor Umar Mulinde and his lovely wife, Evelyn.

As we stated before, anyone who speaks with this man will come away changed inside. Despite the turmoil in his life, he has remained calm, straight thinking and even more devoted to his faith.

* If you want to see the earlier interviews with the pastor and his wife, Evelyn, the links are below the video.

Last week, David and Daniel went to visit the pastor and talk to him about his progress. They asked him about the issue of Bible Translators removing God and Son of God from Muslim translations of Scripture. Pastor Mulinde has a very firm opinion on this subject and explained the importance of Not changing scripture.

We are all looking forward to the complete healing of our dear friend. Refuah Shleimah...

Please Continue to Pray for
Pastor Umar Mulinde, his lovely wife Evelyn and their six children...

Pastor Umar Mulinde Needs Your Prayers

David with Pastor Umar
Earlier this week David visited with Pastor Umar Mulinde in Chaim Sheba Hospital in Tel Aviv. The young pastor was quite groggy with medication, nonetheless, they were able to visit and talk together.

If you do not know the story, the links to articles and to his interview are below. If you do nothing else, I urge you to watch the interview. Listen to Pastor Umar tell us, in his own words, of this cowardly attack, the strength of the Love of the Lord,  and his Prayer Needs.

After the Attack
Those who attacked him, have sworn to "finish the job", and indeed there are websites (against apostasy from Islam) that are condemning this man and spreading the most evil of thoughts and comments. With all of this, Pastor Umar is determined, strong, and loyal to the Lord. His enemies operate from the darkest depths of hate, while he is standing firmly in the Light with only love in his heart!

Pastor Umar is facing more surgery, and along with it comes great pain, yet he is strong in spirit and determined to share his message of love and deep faith. We have described him as having the "Heart of a Lion" and this is brought home each time we have contact with him.

Please, listen to his story, and as we enter into the Sabbath, Pray for this amazing young man, and ask everyone you know to Join in Prayer for his healing, and protection from the dark forces who would do him more harm.

Interview With Pastor Umar Mulinde~The Heart of A Lion

Evelyn & Pastor Umar Mulinde
In the past weeks we have posted about an amazing young man who was brutally attacked with acid~for his beliefs.

* The links to these stories are below the videos.

On Thursday, we traveled to Chaim Sheba Rehabilitation Center in Tel Aviv, where we were able to meet with Pastor Mulinde and his lovely wife Evelyn~A truly amazing couple!.

On Saturday, Evelyn returned to Uganda to be with their six children. The older children must return to school, and all of them struggle to understand this vicious attack on their father.

Pastor Umar now faces weeks of skin grafts and painful treatments. He remains in Israel, alone, without his family. He worries about how his young children are coping. He worries for the safety of his family, as those who attacked him have sworn to try again! (See Part II~12:00)

In the two part interview below, you will hear Pastor Mulinde tell you in his own words about his background, the events leading to the attack, his coming to Israel, and how he is coping. Even though he is obviously in pain, swathed in tight bandages, he still wanted to speak~and this he did~softly, but with deep passion and honesty. This is truly a man with the Heart of a Lion, filled with the Spirit of the Lord...

Pastor Umar Mulinde: An Amazing Man with A Great Spirit

Pastor Umar Mulinde
Last week we posted the story HERE of the cowardly acid attack on Pastor Umar Mulinde from Uganda. Yesterday, after many calls we were able to get permission to meet with Pastor Umar Mulinde and his lovely wife Evelyn to film an interview with them. This meeting touched us all in ways that are difficult to describe.

David is now working to edit and prepare the film, which we hope will be available here by Sunday. Meantime, we would like to share some of the message that we received and pictures of these amazing young people.
Speaking Out

When we were escorted to the wing where Pastor Mulinde was, his wife came out to greet us. A gentle, soft-spoken young woman, she assured us that her husband wanted to speak with us, but that he wanted to come out to the room across the hall as there was another patient sharing his room and they did not want to disturb him. I read that she is a beautiful singer, and as she spoke it is easy to believe.

She told us of their six children (including 3 year old twins!) and how she was so very worried about them so far away without their parents to comfort them. This is a young woman who has watched her husband undergo a vicious attack, and over the past weeks stood beside him in his battle with indescribable pain. Now, they are in a strange country, separated from their children, not knowing what the future will bring.

Evelyn, David, Jay, Meridel, Umar
And yet, there were no tears, no wringing of hands, no complaints and most importantly, no hatred or calls for revenge. What we experienced was a quiet acceptance of what was happening and a deep strength of spirit.

To be sure, we were very concerned. Pastor Umar seemed to be in pain (not one word of complaint came from him!) and it was obvious that he was in a more fragile state since the attack. His face and mouth have not healed, so he speaks softly, and carefully.

Pastor Mulinde was determined to tell his story, not to extract revenge or sympathy~but I will touch on that later. Through his tightly bandaged face his focus was directly on us, as he spoke frankly, to our hearts, while Evelyn stood quietly by his side~we could almost feel her "holding him up". It really was one of those situations that one says "you had to be there to understand".
David and Umar

Pastor Mulinde's Story:
You will hear him speak when we post the film, but here are the highlights. Pastor Mulinde was born a Muslim, his father was an Imam and Umar himself was a Sheik, well versed in Islamic doctrine. I need to confirm this, but he said he was the 52nd child. Very openly he told us that as a young man he hated Israel. By the age of twenty years, he had discovered Christianity and made a life-changing decision to convert.

Evelyn and Pastor Umar Mulinde
As he began studying the Bible, he told us that he was always reading about the God of Israel, and Gods people and could not understand the hatred. This made him curious and he began his research to learn more. He told us of a trip he made to Israel in 2008 that transformed him as he found a love for Israel and her people. He took an online course called Israel Inside Out at Jerusalem Online U. His perspective changed as his studies deepened. Soon he was using videos to teach in his church in Uganda. He began bringing groups to Israel so they could also experience what he had found. The hate was replaced with love, and through him, many Muslims were converted and even becoming pastors.

Pastor Umar told us that every Monday, that about one hundred people from the Gospel Life Church International, spend the entire day studying and praying for Israel~Every Monday!
Meridel and Umar

Evelyn told us she was very afraid after the attack because many of the doctors in Uganda were Muslim and there was a fear for his life. He was transported to New Delhi, where he contacted people at Jerusalem Online U and asked to be brought to Israel for treatment. In Kampala a visa for travel to Israel takes four days, but he said that the Israeli embassy in New Delhi had the visa in one day.

Of course we wanted to know if he was angry over what had happened to him. His reply? "I have no hatred, no anger for those who attacked him". He said that what he is angry at is the dark spirit within those people and he was concerned that it was a very dangerous spirit.

When asked what we could do and ask other to do for him to help he declared that there were three things he wanted (paraphrased from the interview):

1) I Need Prayer~I love those who attacked me and need prayer to overcome the dark spirit that has taken over them. He told us that after the attack, three letters were found in the washroom of the church. They said they were sorry that they did not succeed in their attack but they wanted him to know there was Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. It is clear these people are not finished and the danger is still there...

2) I Need Prayer~to do what I need to do to heal my wounds and deal with the constant pain

3) I Need Prayer~for my children. They are young and it is hard to know what they are thinking. Both he and his wife are concerned about what the kids would be inferring from all of this and the fact that in Uganda they might be in grave danger. He wanted Evelyn to return to their children to comfort and strengthen them.

Jay with Umar
We all hugged and wished Evelyn as safe trip~she leaves on Saturday to return to their children. Pastor Umar took each of our hands in turn to say goodby, and we assured him that we would be back and that we would stay in touch. This gentle, soft spoken couple rocked our world.

Be sure to watch the film when it is posted and listen as Pastor Umar tells his story in his own words. Meanwhile, this family needs prayers, encouragement and support from everyone.

Please, as we enter into another Sabbath, Pray for Pastor Umar and Evelyn Mulinde and their children...

Time for Christians, Non-Muslims and Apostates to Speak Out!

Pastor Umar Mulinde
Today we want to share a story with you in the hopes that it will awaken the need to deal with a hatred that is fast spreading around the world, and threatens to shackle us all~unless we stand together, speak out, and say No More!

This is the story of a Ugandan pastor, Umar Mulinde, (age 38) who had spent most of his life as a Muslim~in fact, he was the son of an Islamic Imam and was himself an Islamic teacher, trained in Islamic theology.

He decided late in life to convert to Christianity, and became an evangelical pastor who preached support for Israel. He learned about Israel through online courses provided by JerusalemOnlineU.com, and then began teaching them at his Gospel Life Church International. He even organized a 5,000 person teach-in about Israel in a local stadium. In his own words he states:

At Chaim Sheba Hospital
“I was born into a Muslim family, and although I decided to become a Christian, I have been financially assisting many Muslims, as well as my relatives who are Muslims,” he said. “I have been conducting a peaceful evangelism campaign.”

He spoke against sharia law being implemented into the Ugandan  court system and used his extensive knowledge to debate Muslims  regarding their religion. This brought on threats, a fatwa and attacks on his life.

On Christmas Eve 2011, Pastor Mulinde was viciously attacked with acid~by Muslims~outside the Gospel Life Church International building in Namasuba (ten kilometers outside of Kampalaand).

Describing the cowardly and brutal attack against him, he said, a man claiming to be a Christian approached him...

"I heard him say in a loud voice, "Pastor, pastor," and as I made a turn and looked at him, he poured the liquid onto my face as others poured more liquid on my back and then fled away shouting, Allahu akbar [God is greater]"

Pastor Mulinde was initially admitted to the International Hospital in Kampala, but then he made a request to be taken to Israel to receive advanced medical treatment.

After the Attack
According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Mulinde contacted Andrea Gottlieb, the executive director of the online Jewish distance learning portal JerusalemOnlineU.com, for financial and logistical support so he could be treated in Israel. Gottlieb took on the request and contacted the director-general of the Sheba Medical Center, Professor Zeev Rothstein, who agreed to help Mulinde. The pastor arrived in  Israel on 05 January 2012, via India and Jordan on special visas, and is now being provided with medical treatment free of charge.

You can read more about this amazing young man HERE and also at the Chaim Sheba Site.

To all of our friends and partners, we ask you to Join in Prayer for Pastor Umar Mulinde. He is receiving the best medical care in the world, but over the next weeks and months he will require many painful surgeries and treatments, as well as the traumatic aftermath of this devastating attack, which will most likely include a loss of vision. He is alone, in a foreign country, there is a fatwa on his life, and he is forsaken by his own family members. Who among us could walk this path?

We have posted many articles about the intolerance of Islam for any religion save their own, and their brutal treatment of non-Muslims and Muslims who try to "leave". Some serious questions need to be asked:

* Have we covered our eyes and ears because it is generally Israel and Jews being attacked?
* Have we turned our backs on Christian brothers and sisters because they are living in Africa and the Middle East?
* Has political correctness stopped us from addressing this type of brutal behaviour in our own cities and towns?
* Does anybody truly care about their fellow man these days?
* Is anyone really listening~or are we more concerned with the next "reality show"?

Please take time to think about these matters. We would be interested in hearing your thoughts...

The pictures above were taken at Chaim Sheba Rehabilitation Center in Israel where Pastor Mulinde is currently being treated. Last year we posted a four part series on this amazing facility You can watch the series and see  their outstanding work for yourself at these links:
