Jay and Meridel Rawlings Inside Jaffa Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem |
Exactly one hundred years ago, on 11 December,1917, General Edmund Allenby, entered Jerusalem on foot.
Demonstrating a true understanding of the symbolic sensitivity of Jerusalem to its residents and also the strong religious feelings towards the Holy City the world over, General Allenby, elected to make his entrance through Jaffa Gate on foot, with his staff marching after him.
From there he walked to the entrance of the
Jerusalem Citadel (known as Tower of David), where he met the heads of the
different communities in the city.
General Allenby's entry was in marked contrast to 1898, when the walls
were thoughtlessly cut through to allow Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany and his ostentatious
entourage to ride through with pomp and ceremony.
On 11 December 2017, a symbolic re-enactment of that historic day took place at Jaffa Gate, of the Old City of Jerusalem. Jay and Meridel Rawlings join the hosts of people including Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, and the great, great nephew of General Edmund Allenby, Viscount Henry J. H. Allenby. All were dressed in period costumes and a festive spirit prevailed.
